Today, and looking at the news, many already understood it,  if destinations are to get a share of China’s booming outbound tourism governments must step-in and review their visa policy.

New measures will be implemented to speed up the visa process for Chinese visitors coming to the UK on business. Will that be enough? 49 countries and regions have visa-free or “visa-on-arrival policies” for Chinese citizens (Tourists set to travel light overseas), furthermore a Schengen visa gives them access to 26 countries in Europe, why would Chinese tourists struggle with time-consuming visa procedure when so many alternatives are available?

                                                  
 
Strategies for exposing your hospitality or retail brands to Chinese are many, including working through the travel trade in China or at the destination, advertising outdoors, in print or online, using social media and even paying sales commissions to tour leaders and tour guides. UK Government relaxes tough Chinese visa rules

The Home Office has announced further changes to simplify Britain’s tough rules on Chinese visas, following intense pressure from business leaders who claim the UK is losing up to £1.2bn a year to bureaucracy.

Chinese visitors who travel to the UK on business will now only need to provide an application form, an invitation letter and a letter of employment to support their visa application.

Britain tourism visa scheme is on the move as Home Secretary Theresa May announced an overhaul for Chinese tourists during her speech on the 16th of June on the occasion of China’s premier Li Keqiang’s four-day trip to the country. In our last weekly newsletter, Horst Lommatzsch, former Director Destination Management Asia at the German National Tourism Organisation, reminded us that although Chinese tourists are increasingly fond of independent travel, many of them continue to join group tours. And China’s growing middle class will continue fueling this large number of  group tourists that discover outbound travel for the first time.

For our Monthly newsletter, Mr Lommatzsch kindly accepted to tell us more about the case of Germany as, it is true, lately much of the news we get focus on the rivalry between Paris and London for rich Chinese, outshining the other European countries :

What are the major changes you witnessed in China tourism to Germany between 2008 and now?

Horst Lommatzsch: The number of Chinese tourists visiting Germany has increased.The most visited cities remain the same as before. One of the major changes is that group travels do no longer visit 10 countries in 10 days; however, Chinese tourists’ average stay in Germany is still short, the time for sightseeing is limited and mainly used for shopping.

Another change is that Germany now offers new programmes for individual travel such as self-driving, river cruising and more and we hope that, thanks to such initiatives, individual travel will increase.

Chinese tourists are evolving, looking for more quality in their travel, and although a Schengen visa allows them to visit 26 countries in Europe, many settle for 2 or 3 destinations only. They want to know more about the country itself, its culture, visit museums and have a taste of the local life. 
 
Talking about taste; ‘wine vacation’ in France, Italia or Australia are increasingly popular among Chinese visitors. Some Châteaux in the Bordelais even offers the possibility to Chinese tourists to harvest grape themselves before tasting the wine…
 
No doubt Chinese tourists will continue flocking to their favorite holiday destinations but tourism operators should review their brochures to present them with more out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

Very soon around 100 million Chinese tourists will have traveled outside their country every year. This is a market that is valued more than US$ 100 billion per year, says Atout France, the French Tourism Development Agency. But for European countries it would be wrong to rest on their laurels because Chinese tourists are increasingly demanding.
Last weekend, dozens of protesters marched through Tsim Sha Tsui, a luxury shopping district, waving placards and chanting anti-mainland Chinese slogans.

The news of this week highlighted destinations’ eagerness to welcome the growing wave of Chinese visitors-shoppers. Special Chinese New Year celebrations were held, shops decorated their windows with red lanterns and golden welcoming Chinese characters, Chinese speaking staff were hired and for a moment Spring Festival seemed to be a worldwide event.

 

This week also proved  that Chinese tourists are ready to get of the beaten tracks and enjoy new, more ‘daring’ or ‘experimental’ holiday destinations and overseas experiences.

 

Last but not least, Chinese senior are also on the move, they have time and money and intend to enjoy life after retirement. A segment of China’s outbound travel that should be closely monitored by  tourism operators…

A record 4.5 million Chinese people are estimated to have traveled overseas during Spring Festival, a rise of 12.5 percent from a year ago, according to the China Tourism Administration.

While Europe was one of the most popular destinations, there are marked differences between countries and factors such as the convenience of the visa applications, the influence of popular culture and the special services provided for Chinese travellers.

 
 

The Lunar New Year holiday is about more than a trip back home for many of China’s upper and middle class citizens. It’s also a peak time to take a family or romantic trip, the farther flung the better to escape the maddening crowds that clog China’s roads, railways, and airports during the peak travel season. 

 It’s natural, then, that these Chinese tourists sometimes wind up rubbing elbows with the crowds they thought they left behind at home.

  Happy Ma-Nian (year of the Horse) to you. I hope you enjoyed some Lion dances and had your fill of dumplings. This year is destined to become a breakthrough year for Chinese outbound tourism, with annual numbers now in triple digits. This market’s quick-changing demographics make forecasting a huge challenge. We try very hard to stay on top of all developments and keep you informed with this newsletter. Hard to believe it, but it is now in it’s 9th year!

  I was recently a guest speaker and panel chair on the luxury Chinese outbound travel market at the Hurun Report / Chopsticks Club conference, 22nd of January. I offered the audience a few insights on the profile, motivation and expectations of high-end Chinese visitors and advice to brands on the best ways to reach, welcome and cater to these customers. The presentation is now available online for our readers. 

 

  ChinaContact was selected by VisitBritain to provide the content for a new portal helping the UK tourism industry prepare for, and cater to, the Chinese visitors. The GREAT China Welcome Campaign will provide background cultural and business information, practical tips, and links to further assistance, to any UK based business wishing to target the Chinese market. Making Britain more welcoming and friendly to Chinese tourists as changes are being made to the UK visa application to make it more accessible,  should lead to more Chinese choosing Britain as their next holiday, business or education destination. The website will be officially launched with the ‘GREAT China Welcome Business Summit’ at the London Hilton Metropole on March 26th. We look forward seeing you there! Perception of UK visa rules serve to Chinese shoppers

Chinese shoppers are responsible for a third of the world’s luxury sales, and many enjoy treating themselves when travelling abroad. But the British luxury industry is missing out, and the UK government is waking up to the problem.
