Chinese tourists are arriving in Europe in record numbers. This year, their numbers are passing 100 million outbound trips and the market is more segmented than ever before. It is now more important than ever to focus on brand reputation and targeted marketing.

The series of China Edge Breakfast Sessions is continuing with a workshop focusing on luxury Chinese consumers. It will explain the interaction between offline events and online engagement through Chinese social media, in particular Sina Weibo, Tencent Weixin, Douban and Youku. You will learn where Chinese find inspiration for travel – for example, rich travel forums like Qiongyou – and how you can engage them along the planning timeline. It is an intense, practical and informative workshop intended for director level executives in business development, sales, marketing and PR.

However, a recent study by UK-based luxury retail and travel consultancy China Edge shows that Chinese social media platforms have so far been almost entirely neglected by London hoteliers.

China Edge surveyed the Chinese social media engagement of 102 hotels in London, including 87 five-star and 15 four-star properties. Out of this pool, only six of the properties had registered Sina Weibo accounts, and none had WeChat accounts.

These two social media platforms are China’s largest, with 500 million users and over 400 users, respectively. China’s explosion of social media—Weibo launched less than five years ago, and WeChat has been around just over three years—also comes at a time when more and more Chinese are travelling abroad. There were 97 million outbound China travellers in 2013, and this number is expected to reach 100 million in 2014.

Still, London hoteliers have been slow to engage. Of the six properties with Weibo accounts, two have yet to post any content. Additionally, three of the other hotels repost the same content from all three accounts as opposed to generating original posts. Only one hotel, the May Fair Hotel, posts regularly, and occasionally assesses their competitors’ marketing campaigns. The remaining properties are not active, and do not have obvious Chinese social media posting strategies. The London hotels on Weibo also currently have far fewer followers than most hotel accounts in China—even the most-followed accounts have only around one percent or less of the followers of popular hotels in Beijing or Shanghai.

While Weibo remains China’s most popular social media platform for now, WeChat has caught up quickly and has seen more growth and increasing popularity in the last year. The ability of businesses to sign up for official accounts on this platform has allowed them to connect with a target audience on what started out as a free messaging and private micro blogging service.

Major international hotel chains such as Marriott and Four Seasons have Weibo and WeChat accounts for both the chain and some individual properties in China, but no major hotel group has registered Chinese social media accounts for their individual hotels based in the UK.

The most influential social media marketing tools for Chinese audiences, Weibo and WeChat have yet to be utilised to their full potential by London hoteliers. As a market, London does attract fewer Chinese visitors than cities within Asia or even Western Europe. Still, Britain’s capital does attract a higher percentage of independent travellers that are highly responsive to social media engagement. Reaching them through Weibo and WeChat is a low-cost, fast and effective method that more hotels should be taking advantage of. As the Chinese outbound travel market continues to grow, engagement on social media will no doubt become an increasingly valuable tool and pressing need for hotel properties in London and other major destinations for Chinese travellers.

Sylvie Chen and Roy Graff attended ILTM Asia in June, Providing a platform at the pre-eminent luxury travel B2B trade show in Asia for our sister company China Edge and its clients, as well as IcelandEurope, a luxury tour operator from Iceland.

ILTM Asia is the most professionally organized B2B trade show in China at the moment, with a clear focus on luxury travel. It attractsinternational exhibitors, many of which also exhibit at ILTM in Cannes. The vast majority of the exhibitors are hotels. Chain hotels exhibit in an exclusive hall and independent hotels are mostly represented by marketing companies. 

Tourism boards of several countries were present, namely Britain, Italy, France, Switzerland, USA, New Zealand, Singapore. There was noticeable absence of some destinations that previously attended the show, such as Australia and UAE.

In the experience of our clients that we represented at the event, 80% of the appointments were relevant to their service offering, and a number of the agents requested follow up with specific brands. […]

In our last weekly newsletter, Horst Lommatzsch, former Director Destination Management Asia at the German National Tourism Organisation, reminded us that although Chinese tourists are increasingly fond of independent travel, many of them continue to join group tours. And China’s growing middle class will continue fueling this large number of  group tourists that discover outbound travel for the first time.

For our Monthly newsletter, Mr Lommatzsch kindly accepted to tell us more about the case of Germany as, it is true, lately much of the news we get focus on the rivalry between Paris and London for rich Chinese, outshining the other European countries :

What are the major changes you witnessed in China tourism to Germany between 2008 and now?

Horst Lommatzsch: The number of Chinese tourists visiting Germany has increased.The most visited cities remain the same as before. One of the major changes is that group travels do no longer visit 10 countries in 10 days; however, Chinese tourists’ average stay in Germany is still short, the time for sightseeing is limited and mainly used for shopping.

Another change is that Germany now offers new programmes for individual travel such as self-driving, river cruising and more and we hope that, thanks to such initiatives, individual travel will increase.

For the last couple of weeks, rumors claimed that Baidu’s travel website Qunar was discussing a partnership or even a possible merger with Ctrip the largest OTA in China ( Baidu’s Qunar Said to Be in Merger Talks With Ctrip, Bloomberg). If such a merger would occur Baidu would then be in control of the whole online travel market in China (Ctrip’s Merge With Qunar Will Change China OTA Market, China Internet Watch).

However none of the firms officially confirmed that an online travel service giant was on the making (Firms decline to comment on merger rumors, Global Times) and from the interview Qunar CEO Chenchao Zhuang gave to Skift, Qunar will become the Chinese largest online travel company with or without the participation of Ctrip…

The GREAT China Welcome Charter by VisitBritain has been successfully launched last week during a summit at the London Hilton Metropole. The online guide created by ChinaContact is now available, it provides background cultural and business information, practical tips, and links to further assistance, to any UK based business wishing to target the Chinese market.   Happy Ma-Nian (year of the Horse) to you. I hope you enjoyed some Lion dances and had your fill of dumplings. This year is destined to become a breakthrough year for Chinese outbound tourism, with annual numbers now in triple digits. This market’s quick-changing demographics make forecasting a huge challenge. We try very hard to stay on top of all developments and keep you informed with this newsletter. Hard to believe it, but it is now in it’s 9th year!

  I was recently a guest speaker and panel chair on the luxury Chinese outbound travel market at the Hurun Report / Chopsticks Club conference, 22nd of January. I offered the audience a few insights on the profile, motivation and expectations of high-end Chinese visitors and advice to brands on the best ways to reach, welcome and cater to these customers. The presentation is now available online for our readers. 

 

  ChinaContact was selected by VisitBritain to provide the content for a new portal helping the UK tourism industry prepare for, and cater to, the Chinese visitors. The GREAT China Welcome Campaign will provide background cultural and business information, practical tips, and links to further assistance, to any UK based business wishing to target the Chinese market. Making Britain more welcoming and friendly to Chinese tourists as changes are being made to the UK visa application to make it more accessible,  should lead to more Chinese choosing Britain as their next holiday, business or education destination. The website will be officially launched with the ‘GREAT China Welcome Business Summit’ at the London Hilton Metropole on March 26th. We look forward seeing you there!  The year 2013 will be remembered as the year when China truly became the most important source market in the world and the last year (probably) when we would be talking about Chinese outbound tourism market in double digits. We also hit a small milestone at ChinaContact with our LinkedIn group growing to 1020 members. From the beginning I was planning for the LinkedIn group to act as a meeting place for professionals to ask questions and voice their opinion about tourism from China and finally I can see it happening in earnest. If you haven’t yet joined the group, it is free and easy to become a member and subscribe to the discussions, contribute and comment.

In the UK, last month saw the launch of the very first China-ready training program for luxury retailers by China Edge. In cooperation with the Bond Street Association, my fellow China Edge Directors and I presented a uniquely tailored 4 day training and strategy program for luxury retailers and hospitality providers. Attended by the top brands from New and Old Bond Street, the launch event presented the contents of the program and listed out the benefits of becoming China Edge certified. We will be taking a breather over the holidays and will not be sending out a newsletter for December. The next edition of our monthly newsletter will be published just before Chinese New Year. The weekly edition will also have a short holiday between December 23 and January 7th. Our Twitter feed will continue to post China related news content if you are hungry for more updates.

 

For 2014, we will be announcing a few new products and initiatives that I feel will offer exciting opportunities to you, our loyal readers. One of them is a chance to be represented at ILTM Asia (June 2014, Shanghai). We have a choice of packages and budgets to allow you to be part of this highly regarded luxury travel trade event.
