Greetings!

Chinese tourists are still new to the world of travel but they are learning fast, furthermore social media platforms offer them access to enough information, tips, and advice to make up their mind on their next destination.

The days you would see Chinese groups swarm out of a bus, take a picture of a touristic site, rush over to the souvenir shop and run back to the bus to quickly head to another overly famous site are almost over.

Now, these knowledgeable tourists want to get off the beaten track, visit places that not everyone has seen yet, and proudly share their unique experience online. And what’s more, they want to travel in small groups or even alone, but definitely independently.

This means only one thing for businesses targeting the Chinese outbound tourism sector: adapting their marketing strategy to this new generation of FIT. And this start by making extensive use of IWOM …

Roy Graff will tell more about the latest trends among Chinese tourists and the key practices to implement in order to reach them through social media channels during his speech at the Travel Distribution Summit Asia (Singapore). Workshop

On the 23rd will take place a workshop on “Tourism and new markets, perspectives and tools on how to deal successfully with the Chinese tourism market” promoted by the Tourism Department of the Municipality of Arzachena- Costa Smeralda, in collaboration with Orientalia Lab.

China poised to become greatest economy and leading tourism market

Nearly 1 in 10 international tourists worldwide is now Chinese. Chinese vice-premier Wang Yang told the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit in Hainan: “In the next five years, Chinese outbound tourism will exceed 500 million trips.”

WTTC president and chief executive David Scowsill said: “It is widely accepted that China will overtake the US as the world’s biggest travel and tourism economy in the next 10 years and, indeed, as the biggest economy.

This year’s edition of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Global Summit is well on its second day, but it was the speech of its president and chief executive, David Scowsill’s speech that is making the news.

ChinaContact’s client Eurostar sponsored Geyoo Travel Salon’s DIY travel workshop in Beijing on the 13th of April.

50 high net worth Chinese guests, selected out of 250 registered applicants, attended the 3 hour workshop at Beijing’s Parkson Department Store VIP salon.

The guests learned about independent travel in Europe including rail travel, low cost airlines and self drive holidays. They found out about Eurostar’s services and convenient connection between London, Paris and Brussels.

More and more young Chinese are studying overseas. They are particularly attracted by management or financial courses; however lately, curriculum in the tourism and luxury retail sectors are becoming increasingly popular.

Not only do these sectors offer attractive career prospects for students in a context where Chinese outbound tourism is booming and Chinese are the first consumers of luxury goods, these same sectors will also benefit from this newly qualified staff, that knows about the business and, most of all, speaks the language and understands the culture of their most wanted customers.

Last but not least, this overseas Chinese students community has a large influence on luxury purchase and its potential is still overlooked by luxury brands in their marketing campaigns…

Greetings!

Chinese tourists are evolving, looking for more quality in their travel, and although a Schengen visa allows them to visit 26 countries in Europe, many settle for 2 or 3 destinations only. They want to know more about the country itself, its culture, visit museums and have a taste of the local life.

Talking about taste; ‘wine vacation’ in France, Italia or Australia are increasingly popular among Chinese visitors. Some Châteaux in the Bordelais even offers the possibility to Chinese tourists to harvest grape themselves before tasting the wine…

No doubt Chinese tourists will continue flocking to their favorite holiday destinations but tourism operators should review their brochures to present them with more out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

Greetings!

Last week France made the front news by announcing it would set up a fast-track visa scheme for Chinese visitors as part of the celebration marking the 50th anniversary of its diplomatic ties with China. This move was the occasion for business groups in The UK to bring back the debate on the fact that Chinese visitors travelling to Europe have to apply for a separate British visa to enter Britain when a Schengen one allows them to visit 26 European countries.

As for the coming week, on the 22nd, Roy Graff, MD of ChinaContact and Founding Director of China Edge will be a guest panelist speaking about China’s luxury tourism sector at the Hurum Report Conference: Next Stop London for Chinese HNWI hosted by the Bank of China.

Roy Graff, ChinaContact Managing Director, an expert in Chinese luxury travel and hospitality points out in this article that :

“brands must better manage a global inventory and sales system that understands how Chinese approach luxury purchasing. The Chinese customer is now global. The sooner those companies understand this the better. In most cases, China is a separate profit center, competing with other regions for the same customer. Thus, they do not share data across national borders.”

French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said he expected that the new regime, being introduced on January 27, would “massively increase” the number of Chinese tourists visiting Paris and the rest of his country.

In London, business leaders and politicians warned the aggressive move could dramatically strengthen Paris’s hand in the “handbag war” between the French and British capitals, as they battle to attract the world’s highest spending tourists.

In this week’s news, the focus was on the influence of China’s new tourism law and visa regulations on Chinese outbound tourism. Nevertheless Chinese tourists are on their way to outspend all the others combined and have a strong thirst for new overseas travel experiences that no new regulation or law will prevent them from quenching.

CHINESE CAN VISIT 18 COUNTRIES WITHOUT PRIOR VISAS

INFLUENCE OF NEW TOURISM LAW FELT IN CHINA OUTBOUND TOURISM

Chinese can visit 18 countries without prior visas : but the exit and entry inspection could bar Chinese nationals from leaving the country if their destination does not fit with the government protocol.

The Beijing General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection said on Tuesday on its official Sina Weibo account that its intention as one that “does not want to stop travelers but the inspection station itself has to follow protocols issued by the Ministry of Public Security.” …

Destinations around the world have reported lower arrival numbers for Chinese visitors in the weeks following the introduction of the new Chinese tourism law. Many Chinese outbound tour operators raised their prices especially for their cheapest products as once again they have to pay their tour guides.

The new Chinese tourism law, rules out the common practices of forced shopping or involuntary payments for activities outside fixed itineraries for Chinese package tours…
