The increase of Chinese tourists travelling abroad is now followed by Chinese hospitality groups expanding internationally and buying overseas hotels out. The announcement made last Wednesday of Jing Jiang International buying French hotel group, Louvres Hotels group, has been causing quite a commotion. This acquisition raises a number of questions in the tourism industry:

Will a Shanghai-based hotel group understand better Chinese consumers’ needs abroad? Will it affect Chinese tourists’ habits? How important is the nationality of the hotel’s owner when it comes to choosing an accommodation abroad for Chinese tourists ?

No doubt then that the opportunity to travel closer to the stars is one they would not miss. Indeed hundred of wealthy Chinese have already booked their tickets and are now chomping at the bit to get on the next spaceship for a few minutes of weightlessness.

 

China’s wealthiest people are also increasingly concerned about their everyday life environment and are looking to establish themselves abroad for the long term as illustrated by Hurun Report last survey. The main motivations being: enjoying fresh air, providing high level education to their children and savouring quality food…

Last week we talked about the shift from mass group travel to individual travellers from China. This is a new phenomenon and the shift is happening fast. However thanks to the addition of new people to the middle classes in China, tourists continue to join groups and discover outbound travel for the first time. There is a fast growth in independent travel but the numbers of group tourists is still much larger and will continue to grow in the foreseeable future, generated by people living in 2nd and 3rd tier cities all over China.  
Thanks to Horst Lommatzsch, former Director Destination Management Asia at the German National Tourism Organisation, for reminding us of this important fact.

 

Reminder:
ChinaContact Managing Director Roy Graff and, Business Development Manager Sylvie Chen will attend TDS Asia, Singapore. And on the 27th Roy will take part in a panel entitled “”Where Should You Invest? Compare APAC’s Fastest Growing & Most Popular Marketing Channels”.

The news of this week highlighted destinations’ eagerness to welcome the growing wave of Chinese visitors-shoppers. Special Chinese New Year celebrations were held, shops decorated their windows with red lanterns and golden welcoming Chinese characters, Chinese speaking staff were hired and for a moment Spring Festival seemed to be a worldwide event.

 

This week also proved  that Chinese tourists are ready to get of the beaten tracks and enjoy new, more ‘daring’ or ‘experimental’ holiday destinations and overseas experiences.

 

Last but not least, Chinese senior are also on the move, they have time and money and intend to enjoy life after retirement. A segment of China’s outbound travel that should be closely monitored by  tourism operators…

A record 4.5 million Chinese people are estimated to have traveled overseas during Spring Festival, a rise of 12.5 percent from a year ago, according to the China Tourism Administration.

While Europe was one of the most popular destinations, there are marked differences between countries and factors such as the convenience of the visa applications, the influence of popular culture and the special services provided for Chinese travellers.

 
 

The Lunar New Year holiday is about more than a trip back home for many of China’s upper and middle class citizens. It’s also a peak time to take a family or romantic trip, the farther flung the better to escape the maddening crowds that clog China’s roads, railways, and airports during the peak travel season. 

 It’s natural, then, that these Chinese tourists sometimes wind up rubbing elbows with the crowds they thought they left behind at home.

On Jan 22nd took place the Hurun/Chopsticks Club event sponsored by Bank of China, where Roy Graff was a guest speaker and panel chair on the luxury Chinese outbound travel market, click here to see his presentation.
Last week, Hurun Report also published its 2014 Survey on Chinese Luxury Consumer. The results show that High Net Worth Chinese individuals are travelling more often for business matter (up to 8 days a month) and that although their leisure time decreased by 20%, travelling remains their preferred leisure activity.
The conclusions of the survey also revealed the UK is their favorite destination for the secondary education of their children, and comes second, after the US, for undergraduate studies and above. An opportunity for the British tourism sector not only to welcome more young Chinese but also their family coming to visit.
 
Last but not least, the Financial Times’ China Confidential research group project 112 million outbound travellers in 2014, a 15% increase on 2013. No doubt this new wave of Chinese tourists will be a top priority for destinations.

Does the small matter of who sits in the White House make a difference to the number of Chinese visitors coming to the United States? The Chinese visitors that spend big bucks on luxury goods, clothes, and even houses, whose money helps keep retail and manufacturing jobs in the US and delivers nice tax revenue to the government?

In light of what is being said in the debates and in the media, I think these are important questions. As I explained in a previous post, in China nothing is far away from politics and national interests. If the rhetoric evolves into action (eg. trade disputes, WTO resolutions or punitive duties) from the US side, China will have no hesitation using any economic tools at its disposal in retaliation. This includes delivering or witholding Chinese customers to American retailers through the mechanism of tourism. Evidence of this type of action abounds, from France to Norway, Philippines to Japan.

So if you have an interest in growing the American tourism sector, the Chinese market is your future and who wins this election may directly impact on your revenue from that market. Regardless of who becomes President for the next four years, China is on its way to becoming a favourite punching back for domestic politics so this is an issue that will not be put to rest quickly. From the perspective of wanting a healthy and robust tourism industry in the US, we should be mindful of how trade disputes play out.

Equally excited were the US state and city tourism promotion bodies and private tour operators eager to find a new revenue stream as America’s tourism industry suffers from a global economic downturn. Many tourism promotion bodies opened representative offices or appointed sales representatives in China in anticipation of the tourism boom. From July 2008, Chinese tour groups began to travel to the US on a tourist visas. The weakness of the US Dollar in relation to the Chinese Yuan means stronger purchasing power for Chinese consumers, who are on the whole aspiring to visit the America they see in cinema and television.
We would advise caution in reading too much into this new agreement. Even before it was inked, Chinese traveled to the US on so-called business tour groups and estimates put them at around 400,000 per year. The US authorities expect tourism to grow to 500,000 in 2011. This is a very slow, controlled and unambitious figure that makes it difficult for destinations in the US to realize returns on their investment in the Chinese market quickly.
